The mission of this community site is to provide the meeting place for those who are engaged or interested in multi-lingual Web sites. About a decade ago, you may have heard very often the Slogan “globalize your software.” Thanks to this big tide of globalization, most software today is multi-lingual. Gone are the days that one has to buy two different packages of software, one for English and the other for one's mother tongue. However, we do not hear very often about “globalize your home page”, although the underlying technology to globalize both software and home page is very similar. You separate the codes or html tags from resources or contents, so that the latter can be replaced for different languages while keeping the former unchanged. We should like to promote the technology of globalizing home pages through this community.
This community initially focuses on English and Japanese and provides two faces that are identical in layouts and contents but presented in each language. This site uses one code system, which detects the primary language used by the visiting browser and generates either the Japanese page (when the language is Japanese) or the English page (when the language is anything else) dynamically. All the pages for the community get the respective text from a SQL database and the respective graphic from a pool of skins or themes. Just like the global software that operates on the same system code but with different resources for different languages, this sites also operates on the same system code but always with different texts and sometimes with different skins. Hopefully sometime in future, we can get some volunteer language specialists to provide this site with the faces of different languages as well.
